Birth Control

Using the list of the ten methods of birth control described on the previous page, answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper.  If you wish, you may give your work in by e-mail, just remember to follow the rules and instructions for sending homework by e-mail.

  1. List the methods which could be classified as barrier methods.  (In other words, methods which act as a physical wall between the egg and the sperm.)
  2. List the methods which use chemicals of one form or another.
  3. List the methods which only require a change in lifestyle (no devices or chemicals necessary).
  4. Make a table of the methods using the two columns below concerning how reliable (effective) they are.  In the first column, put methods which are difficult to judge because the reliability depends on who uses them and how.  In this column, include methods which do not work well alone but need another method to be effective.  For the second column, put the methods which are the most reliable - they work the best.

  5. Which method is the least reliable (has the least success in preventing pregnancy)?  Which one is the most reliable (the best for preventing pregnancy).  Give reasons for your answers.
  6. List the methods which require a doctor's prescription.
  7. Which method or methods protect against the spread of sexually transmitted diseases?
  8. Which method works by stopping the embryo from implanting in the uterus.
  9. List the methods which require some kind of a medical procedure before using.
  10. Which methods use copies of hormones to send messages in the body?  In your answer, describe what the message is.
